Evaluation Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In this evaluation question, I will be discussing how my music video follows, develops or challenges the traditional conventions from an influential music video.

Titles:
The titles in the music video for 'Running with the Wild Things' appear in the centre of the screen and fade in gradually and seamlessly to create a crisp image, whilst not deterring the audience's attention away from the music video running in the background.

Editing:
In the shot shown there is a fade effect happening, this is to show a change of time between the two shots. to make the change fluid and effective the first scene had red and blue fashing lights which slowly faded into the second scene of the police car.

Performance:
The performance in the music video for 'Running with the Wild Things' follows an amateur performance feel with the performers moving around and the singer uses her hands quite a bit.

Sound Effects:
In the scene shown there a sound effect of a police car siren. This links into the lighting effect of the red and blue flashing lights in the scene and therefore the sound effect helps build on the story.

Shot Privilege:
The lead singer is given the longer shots and in general, is just seen more in the video as she is the singer and also plays the main character.

Camerawork:
In the video, the camerawork is very mobile and feels like it could have been filmed on a handheld camera. in the shot shown the camera arcs around the band member. I like this scene as it gives a sense of perspective.

Cutting to the Beat:
With the beat being the building block for the song in the first place, it only makes sense to the directors to cut to the beat of the song for the music video. By doing so, it keeps the pace of the music video true to the song and helps connect the audience to the song and the video as on.

Story:
The plot for the story is the band acting as a trio of criminals planning a heist or robbery having lost an item or possibly being stolen from them in the first place but wind up getting caught and hence why they are seen playing in a jail cell later on in te video.

Location(s):
The locations used in the video have a stark contrast between the colour palettes in the shots, that being, one minute you are watching the character in a dark warehouse and the next scene they are walking around a house with bright pink lighting. I think the change helps keep the video look fresh and helps develop on story or adds emotion to the scene.

Titles:
Following the conventions seen above, our titles appears over a simple scene via a fade-in to keep the pace of the video constant and so it does not break the flow of the video up or divert the audience's attention from the video.

Editing:my influencial
In this shot the character is using his phone for a flashlight, he walks past the camera and shines it in the lens. Using this as an opportunity to change the scene, there is a crossfade between this scene and the next, but using the light as a way to transition to the next, I made sure to increase the brightness of the next scene so the audience will be oblivious to the crossfade.

Performance:
In my music video, following the analysis of my influential music video, my performer performs in a very similar style to the lead singer in 'Running with the Wild Things'. He uses his hand a fair bit and is moving the majority of the time.

Sound Effects:
In this scene the character is seen washing his face, to add more perspective to the scene, not only did we use a GoPro to go under water and get and low angle shot but we also used the original sound effects of the water. This helps to keep the audience's attention on the video as is adds more depth to the video.

Shot Privilege:
Following conventions, we gave the performer longer and more frequent scenes, this allows the audience to know who they are listening to, as usually, it would be the band lead singer in the video.

Camerawork:
As seen in the analysis of 'Running with the Wild Things' the movement is quick and often arcs around the performer. I followed this convention and arced around my performer but also pushed and pulled with the handheld camera, which I think created a similar effect to the garage band/ amateur feel.

Cutting to the Beat:
To keep my video upbeat and interesting, at many points in my music video I cut to the beat of the song, which is a convention many music videos use in the industry.

Story:
In many modern music videos, the main focus is on something good or relevant in society. In our music video, we decided to challenge those typical conventions and give the song a more dismal feel that is open to interpretation based on the audience's own life.

Location(s):
Using the analysed conventions from 'Running with the Wild Things' our locations also have a sharp contrast difference.This in my opinion helps to build on the small narrative that the main charactr is having issuses in his life as he is either seen in a really colourful (happy) location or a dark location (Symblically meaning ilsolation or unhappy).
